You Can't Do It All

by

Andrew Beaumont

Do you know the difference between working in your business and working on your business?

Working IN your business is the day-to-day things – the things that you do without thinking; those tasks that come as second nature.

Working ON your business is the more strategic, high-level things – such as planning for the future, looking at your business plan, developing your business values, or working on your long term strategy.

Forward thinking

Having had a long corporate career, I spent a lot of time in management meetings and talking to senior leaders about long-term planning and forward thinking.

This stood me in good stead for when I started my own HR consultancy, as I was well-placed to understand the importance of working on my business from day one.

Strength in numbers

I have always had a good business coach – someone who has pushed me to think about strategy and the long term future of my business.  They have always helped me to regularly remove myself from the day-to-day thinking to have a top-down overview of my business.

Another thing I did from the start was learn the importance of outsourcing (which, as a HR specialist, wasn’t too much of a stretch).  I learnt early on that you need to find people that do the stuff that you aren’t an expert in.  This freed up my time in a number of ways – I outsourced the tasks that I didn’t understand, didn’t have time to learn, or simply didn’t like.  Removing myself from the day-to-day tasks freed me up to do other things and focus on business development.

You can't do it all

Speaking of outsourcing, this is exactly the service I provide for clients.

You can’t do it all. As a business owner, you will have to oversee a lot – administration, clients, accounts, finances, bills, and much more.  Being an employer, you will also have to deal with everything that comes with that – the good and the bad, at every part of the process.

In the same way you would outsource to an accountant or a marketer, you should make sure that you are using an expert to oversee your HR requirements.

My role is to provide everything from finding and interviewing staff, employee contracts and handbooks, managing departures, and (in the worst case scenario), handling any grievance procedures.

Make time to work on your business

My HR services are for business owners and employers to take control of their businesses.

By outsourcing your HR and letting me deal with change management, your workplace culture, and team development, this gives you a solid foundation from which to grow your business, expand your team, and focus on the long-term success.

Of course, I do the day-to-day management of hiring, employee contracts, handbooks, grievances, mediations, redundancy, and everything in between.

Being an independent consultant means that I am not governed by any particular rules or stipulations – my goal is to simply provide the best support possible using my years of HR expertise.

Overall, the most important thing is that I work IN your business, so you have more time to work ON your business.

If you would like to discuss how I can help your business and oversee your HR function, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
