I think we're just out of Waldorfs

I think we're just out of Waldorfs

My wife and I are going to America, and we have been waiting for this trip for over two years.

Thanks to the pandemic, the trip has been postponed twice already, and so it’s third time lucky.

When I usually go away, I take my devices and I’m checking my emails (as much as I try not to). This time, I am leaving my laptop at home.  I want to make sure I can properly enjoy the holiday, and not worry about work.

I’m taking my phone though, but only because I will be taking lots of photos – it won’t have my emails on it.

Trust your team

I won’t worry about work because I trust my team implicitly.

Jess will hold the fort and manage anything that comes in from our retained clients; my VA Louise has access to my emails just in case there is anything really urgent; and Gus has my marketing plan mapped out so I stay visible.

If you are an employer, whether you have a team or hire external contractors / freelancers, everyone is entitled to a holiday where they don’t have to think about work.

A bit of R&R

The pandemic has amplified the ‘always on’ work ethic, and many employers don’t think about the risks posed by a few emails here or a couple of phone calls there.  It means the employee never really switches off, and this can have an adverse effect on their holiday, family time, or thought processes.

Often this is easier said than done, but advance planning is so important in such cases.

In a 52-week, 365-day year, everyone needs rest and recuperation.

For me, my retained clients have all been informed.  If I was an employee, I’d be allowed holiday and work would be managed in my absence, so it shouldn’t be any different as a business owner (where possible).

Celebrating my 100th

My wife and I have been planning this trip for a longtime, and our itinerary is packed.

We are going to Las Vegas (staying at the Waldorf*); driving along Route 66; climbing the ‘Rocky steps’ in Philadelphia; and visiting the birthplace of the first love of my life (which is Madonna, in case you were wondering).

On top of all this, I will be celebrating my 100th visit to a Hard Rock Café.  As you may know, I am a huge fan of the brand and I can’t wait to celebrate this milestone in the States.

And finally

As I always say, your people are your biggest asset, and you should treat them as such.  Happy teams mean happy clients, which should be the perfect combination to allow youto take a well-earned rest.

*As we’re staying at the Waldorf, it was only right toinclude a sketch about Waldorf salads from one the UK’s best sitcoms – enjoy here: https://youtu.be/BZoUH43nI4w
